Black & White Female Portrait Showcase
I think it is safe to say that most photographers will agree that black and white portraits are just as powerful, if not more powerful than color portraits. This post is a showcase of amazing black and white female portraits.
In my honest opinion, black and white portraits do a much better job at showing a women’s personality. The lack of color does amazing things to show us the true emotion of the subject. Female portraits aren’t about having a pretty face covered in makeup on the other side of a camera, but instead about understanding what’s going on inside the other person and reflecting it in the photograph.
This post doesn’t discuss the technique behind capturing a female portrait effectively (and mind you, there are different approaches for taking portrait shots of men and women which is why only one is being shown here).
Aneta Kowalczyk

Aneta Kowalczyk started her career as a photographer after having worked as model for several years. No doubt that her experiences as a model helped her develop such a creative eye for beauty portraits.
Zhang Jingna

Zhang Jingna is a freelance photographer based out of Singapore. She has worked hard to develop a photographic style that is uniquely her own. This is no easy task to accomplish in the photography community, but one I feel confident in saying she has achieved.
J. Borodina

J. Borodina is an outstanding female photographer. She currently resides in Moscow, Russia.
Lara Jade

Lara Jade has been one of my favorite photographers for some time now. I started following her early on and have watched her skill and style develop over the years. I am constantly amazed by what she comes up with. She has done an excellent job at creating her own signature style.
Scott Smallin

Scott Smallin is beyond amazing. He has done a ton of work for the popular site Suicide Girls, which we can’t show on Tututorial9. I admire his work so much he will be photographing my wedding! The images below don’t do his work justice.

Flag as inappropriatenice photo and awesome b&w.
Flag as inappropriateI would like to see beautiful pictures of ordinary woman rather than ordinary pictures of beautiful women. The Post began with a comment about how B/W reveals the personality of the subject but so far all I’ve seen is the personality of the photographer and that of the makeup artist/Photoshop.
Flag as inappropriateHenri Cartier-Bresson and Edward Steichen, now there’s a good start to true B/W photography of real people. A little dodge and burn and that’s it, none of this other fluff.
One more comment, digital colour converted to B/W does look different to B/W film. Sometimes subtle, but still it shows.
Is it possible to purchase a book with these photographs?

Nice collection! Very impressive.
Flag as inappropriateJust great photos. The young lady with the “Pippi Langstrumpf”-alike hair cut is a great shot. Also the angle of the photo ‘girl in the car’ is #1 IMHO.
Flag as inappropriateSome absolutely outstanding photography there. I used to study photography at college and absolutely loved it. Currently saving for a digital SLR for the summer so i can get back into it again.
Flag as inappropriateGood luck for your SLR!
Flag as inappropriatePretty women! Very good photography! I wanna practice photography but I don’t have any idea what brand/model of camera to buy..hmmmm
Flag as inappropriateWe’ll have to do a community vote sometime to see what everyone’s favorites are, but there are some suggestions I’ve made in this post: http://www.tutorial9.net/photography/wildlife-photography-tips-take-better-wildlife-photos/
They’re more or less picked by the average customer review, word of mouth, and some personal use, but it ought to give you an idea of what to look for.
Flag as inappropriateWomen would not be so interested in making up, dressing up and also getting their ‘beauty portraits’ taken if all those things did not smudge their real selves. They run a mile from any exposure of those.
What these photos demonstrate is how to lie.
And there ain’t nuttin wrong with lyin’.
