In todays Photoshop Tip, I’ll show you how to change the orientation of your text between Horizontal and Vertical Type. Very useful for beginning users looking to learn more about the Type Tools.
The Vertical Type Tool

The Horizontal Type Tool is probably one of the most common tools in Photoshop. It easily casts shadows over its sister tool, the Vertical Type Tool.
“Wait… there’s more than one Type Tool?”
Yup. You just hardly ever see it since it’s stuck behind the Horizontal Type Tool. Shouldn’t there be an easier way to switch between the two text orientations since the tools are so similar?
Quickly Change Type Orientation
There actually is a very simple way to change text orientation on the fly, without switching between tools, or recreating text.
While you are working with some type in a document, you can switch back and forth all in one simple click by pressing the Change the Text Orientation button.

That sure makes things easier!

Hey, this is very helpful! Thanks a lot.

While you’re on the subject of text orientation, I thought I might mention something else cool that you can do (not to steal any glory). If you use the pen tool and draw a line, you can then grab the text tool and type along the line!
Heya i tried this but my text is set to red but invisable text shows … or rather it dosent lol but ya it typed along the curved path! thxxx
nice tutorial for a beginner like me.
i have a problem, how can i type a message
in paragraph?
what i mean is, when typing, only 1 line i can type!
i cannot make it below, otherwise u will
add another layers 2 create new texts..
help me pls! thanx & more power…
you just need to press enter and it will go down to the next line so that you wont be making a new layer.
I have a similar problem to warlica in that I am attempting to edit a template and any text I enter after pressing the key overwrites the first line. I cannot enter more than one line of text. I have closed down Photoshop CS3 Extended and tried to open a new image and enter text. Same problem. Do you think that I have corrupted my version of Photoshop?
This is fine, but typographically speaking it is wrong and unprofessional and to place text in this manner, not to mention “its ugly”.
For beginners, I would suggest typing your text, then rotating 90 degrees.
warlica357 you can just hit enter and it will go to the next line. Additionally, you can also create a text box in PS and type away.
@roren001: What if you’re required to write in a language that reads from top to bottom? In that case, this type of orientation makes the most sense.
Also, this type of type orientation makes more sense when working with numbers sometimes.
This guide is great, i wondered how to do that, but now i know already.. thanks to you man!
Wow..this is a good tip..I’ve been switching the orientation by recreating the type layer..Now I can use this neat tip..
thanks for this wonderful tutoriol…………., ve learnt alot. though am still having trouble with typing. all I see when typing is just a long line. I never saw wht I typed.
